Quotes and Themes – Grade 8 Drama and Language

If you’re not familiar with them, a digital soundboard is a webpage or mobile app that constains a series of spoken quotes that pertain to one subject or theme.

For example:

Star Wars Soundboard

OR

Simpsons Soundboard

For this task students will be creating their own Soundboards while exploring themes within dramatic and musical quotes. The assignment was written with grade 8 curriculum expectations in mind but could likely be changed to fit the curriculum expectations of other grades.

Students will need:

a) to determine a theme,

b) to have a basic understanding of Scratch,

c) to create a Scratch account

d) to have a D2L (or other forum to post their link/explanation) account

QUOTES AND THEMES

A digital soundboard is a webpage or mobile app that contains a series of spoken quotes that pertain to one subject. You can easily find Star Wars, hockey, and music lyric soundboards online with a simple Google Search. Your teacher will show you a classroom appropriate soundboard and demonstrate their use to you.

  • For this project you will be creating your own soundboard consisting of a series of 10 quotes from songs or movies. These 10 quotes must pertain to a theme of your choice.
  • You will then use the programming language Scratch to create your soundboard
  • Once your soundboard is completed you will post a link to your soundboard and a description of why the quotes match your theme to your Desire2Learn account.

Steps to Complete:

  1. Determine a theme that you wish to present
  2. Find 10 quotes that help to reinforce your theme
  3. Log into your Scratch account and start a new program
  4. Create 10 new sprites
  5. Change the Costume for each Sprite to a button, square with text, etc.
  6. Under Sounds record your voice reading 1 quote under each sprite
  7. Use the code template provided on each sprite to have the sound
  8. When you have completed this for all 10 quotes get final approval from your teacher
  9. When you receive final approval from your teacher post the link to your project to the D2L discussion forum Quotes and Themes. To get your link click
  10. After your post the link post a description telling everyone your chosen theme, why the quotes are related and a real-life event that this theme could be associated with.
